Rolled by me
Fall 25
TRT: 1h13m45s
Mostly laid-back collection of mostly love songs.
- 2 seconds of silence
I like a little lead-in. Creating a separate track for this gives me a file to attach my own little half-assed cover image to. (Cuz I attach the original album covers to all the songs.) Since this is file number one, my cover becomes the thumbnail for the folder.
- Ry Cooder (feat. Eldridge King, Terry Evans and Bobby King) “Show Time”
From Show Time (Warners 1977)The intro. In an unhurried, soulful way, three top class harmonists ask the people if they're ready for the show time, show time that's in your town. A massive amount of chops on display for a throwaway little intro. This is attached to the second song on the album, Alimony, but I cut off the actual song part.
- The Cannonball Adderly Quintet “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”
From Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at “The Club” (Capitol 1967)What's to say about this jazz classic but Aaahhh. I read on the innernet that this is a fake live album, not actually recorded at The Club, but instead they brought a small audience into the studio.
- The Beach Boys “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)”
From Pet Sounds (Capitol 1966)Slow slow slow Brian ballad.
- Björk “Hyper-ballad”
From Post (One Little Indian / Elektra 1995)Tho it's undeniably weird, 30 years on I think this has been shown to be one of the great love songs.
- Saint Etitnne “Spring”
From Foxbase Alpha (Heavenly (UK) / Warners (US) 1991)The singer tries to seduce her broken-hearted friend in this piece of trip-hop pop. Hey, you, obsessing over lost love…I'm right here, y'know. You offen hear this sentiment from guys. Somehow it's more endearing when a woman does it. This is the only Saint Etienne album I can lissen to all the way thru, and it's an all-time faverit for me.
- Bobby Caldwell “Open Your Eyes”
From Cat In The Hat (Clouds 1980)And this is just what I was talking about: the same theme with a male singer. Comes off almost insulting. Open yer eyes, dimbulb, and look at me. Still a good tune, a minor classic, altho people of my generation probably mostly know it from the sample on Common's The Light. One time I was macking with this panhandler at an intersection and he just started belting out this song. We sang it together until the light turned green.
- Curtis Mayfield “So In Love”
From There’s no place like America Today (Curtom 1975)A perfect, laid-back groove. Quinton Joseph's drumming really knocks me out. Makes me make a sound somewhere between unh and aah.
- Aretha Franklin “Look Into Your Heart”
From Sparkle (Atlantic 1976)When Aretha tells you to take some inventory, you do it. Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield.
- Lauryn Hill “Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You” (my edit)
From The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill (Ruffhouse/Columbia 1998)Hip hop soul take on an old Frankie Valli tune. God damn Lauryn is good. It is unjust to fade this song out early but I have a lot to get to, and I still like to keep my mixes under 74 minutes, the original ceedee standard.
- Mary J Blige “Real Love”
From What’s the 411? (Uptown 1992)The Queen of hip hop soul, speaking of. If you don't know about Real Love, get off the crack.
- Nina Simone “Buck”
From Nina Simone Sings the Blues (RCA Victor 1967)I think most of the songs where a woman sings about how great her man is are wack. This is an exception.
- Jack Logan & Bob Kimbell “Dialing Your Number”
From Little Private Angel (Parasol 1998)Another all-time fave album. Super low key (not to mention low fi), super heartfelt.
- Smokey Robinson “Being With You”
From Being With You (Tamla 1981)It's cheesy but it's a good song.
- Chance the Rapper (feat. Justin Bieber and Towkio) “Juke Jam”
From Coloring Book (2016)I wore this tape out back when it was new. This was my sleeper tune. Not one of my early faverits, but it's the one that has stuck with me. Chano is also a little cheesy, and nothing he's done after Coloring Book has really caught my ear.
- D'Angelo “Send It On”
From Voodoo (Cheeba Sound / Virgin 2000)Another perfect groove. Standout song from a top tier album.
- Prince “Adore”
From Sign “☮️” The Times (Paisley Park 1987)Prince doing what Prince does.
- Allen Toussaint “My Baby Is The Real Thing”
From Life, Love And Faith (Reprise 1972) - Ry Cooder “Jesus On The Mainline”
From Paradise & Lunch (Reprise 1974)Another master, a one of a kind artist, and a killer band have all kinds of fun with a great old gospel tune.
- Dexy’s Midnight Runners “Seven Days Too Long”
From Searching For The Young Soul Rebels (Late Night Feelings / Parlophone / EMI 1980)Kept things fairly laid-back til now, but here comes a hi-energy rave up in the eleventh hour. I like it when rock bands take are&bea songs and play them super fast and raucous and loud.
- Joe Bataan “More Today Than Yesterday”
From Mr. New York And The East Side Kids (Fania 1970)My faverit version of this classic pop love song. Joe Bataan is the fuckin best. If you don't agree I'll clobber ya.
- 4 seconds of silence
This one came together quick, in a way I was happy with. No major revisions. Might be a little too much love, but I didnt make it real sickly sweet.
Transition that feels a little off: Right at the top, Show Time into Mercy Mercy Mercy, I'm still not sure it quite flows. I had to cut off the guitar lick at the end of Show Time just before it resolved becuz it goes straight into Alimony. Then Mercy Mercy starts in a diffrent key, so it all leaves you a bit discomboobled.
Transition I like the best: Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder) into Hyper-ballad works surprisingly well!
